Personalized Therapies
Allergy Patch Testing
Patch testing is a common diagnostic tool used to identify the specific agent that triggers contact dermatitis, an itchy rash that can breakout on your skin in response to a substance to which you are allergic. Common trigger substances include jewelry, hair care products, cleaning solutions, detergent, cosmetics, perfumes, and latex rubber.
Isotretinoin/Accutane (Acne Treatment)
WHAT IS ACCUTANE?
Accutane is one of the trade names for the drug Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is a retinoid, derived from vitamin A, and is a very powerful drug for the treatment of severe acne. Accutane can control acne for months or years after the end of the treatment. Four to five months of Isotretinoin treatment at the correct dose can lead to clearing of acne for one or more years (or even permanently) after medication is stopped. Other acne-controlling medicines are only effective while they are being taken. Isotretinoin can have significant side effects when taken so it is prescribed under strict guidelines.
Biologics (Treatments) for Psoriasis
There is currently no cure for psoriasis, but there are multiple psoriasis treatments available that can usually lead to a clearing of symptoms. The goal of treatment is to stop the skin cell overgrowth that leads to plaque formation and inflammation. Treatment options include topical medications, oral medications, lasers, and a new class of medications called “biologics”. The medical team at Georgia Skin & Cancer Clinic have a tremendous amount of experience in diagnosing and treating psoriasis. We provide careful examination and care plans that allow us to prescribe and monitor our psoriasis/biologics patients very closely.
Results Can Vary
Since some treatments work better for some patients than others, be prepared that it may take trying a combination of treatment modalities to obtain the best outcome. Your healthcare provider may recommend biologics depending on the following factors: type of psoriasis, location (scalp, trunk, hands feet, etc.), severity of psoriasis, results of previous treatments, ease or convenience of a treatment, possible side effects.
Examples of Biologic Drugs Include:
Adalimumab (Humira) Etanercept (Enbrel) Golimumab (Simponi) Infliximab (Remicade) Ustekinumab (Stelara)
